American Heart Association Endorses Nintendo WII!?:

On Monday May 17, 2010, it was announced that the American Heart Association will be endorsing and putting their stamp on the Nintendo WII. The understanding I have, is in return they will receive a $1.5 Million donation for the use of their name from Nintendo.

In a day where principals have seemingly taken a backseat to "Benjamin’s," this is another ding that this institution will put on the fitness world. I know some may argue, "people are not so gullible that they would buy a video game and think it is "exercise," right?" I would beg-to-differ that unfortunately we live in a very gullible society, where people are looking for the easiest way to get hard work done, without having to put in the hard work. I do appreciate those who have the "not-so-common sense" to think that people would not actually fall for the stamp.

So, now someone thinks boxing, bowling or running on a video game is the equivalent of being outside and running, walking, biking, playing Frisbee, playing tag, etc.? The answer is, yes! That is why in the United States, we have a high rate of obesity! As a youngster, I enjoyed all the things listed above and more. Now, instead of seeing parents buy a $200 basketball hoop, I see them buy a $400 video console. Instead of buying a $20 football, I see them buy a $50 cartridge. Those same parents who are not expressing the importance of physical activity, will now push the "cheap babysitter" even harder on their children and push the overweight/obesity rate to all new highs!

I hope that the active parents out there continue to keep your children active and involved and if video games are bought, they are used sparingly for rainy-day entertainment and not a "workout routine."
